As a photographer, I embarked on a journey with a group of refugees fleeing war-torn Syria, immersing myself in their experiences rather than observing from an outsider’s perspective. My project, Escaping Death: Syrian Refugees, offers a raw and intimate look at this refugee crisis.
The journey began in Iraq, where I documented the lives of refugees in camps—people who continue to hold onto the hope of returning to Syria one day. From there, I traveled to refugee camps in Turkey, which often serve as the starting point for many who undertake the dangerous journey to Europe in search of survival and a better future.
Accompanying the refugees, I followed their route through Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria, before finally reaching Germany. Escaping Death is the result of this two-month immersion, capturing the harsh realities and immense challenges of exile while shedding light on the human stories behind the headlines.
